Kia Carens vs Renault Triber Real-World Mileage Comparison

Kia Carens and the Renault Triber are both intended for family travel, they each occupy very different positions in the Indian MPV market. The current model of Kia Carens has a range of 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, while the Renault Triber has a simpler 1.0-litre petrol engine with both manual and AMT options. The Carens diesel can get up to 21.3 km/l on paper, whereas the Triber petrol manual claims 19.76 km/l. However, which one is actually more advisable in terms of road economy, fuel price, and purchase cost?

The Carens originally launched in India in 2022 and now sits below the newer Carens Clavis as Kia’s more value-focused three-row offering. The Triber arrived in 2019 and received its latest major facelift in 2025. Both can seat seven occupants, but the Carens is considerably larger, more powerful and better suited to carrying a full passenger load over long distances. The Triber takes the opposite approach, using compact dimensions, low kerb weight and a smaller engine to keep purchase and running costs low.

The Kia Carens petrol is equipped with a 1.5L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine producing around 115 hp and 144 Nm of torque, while the diesel model has a turbocharged version producing around 116 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The current version of Carens is available with a 6-speed manual transmission. Due to a higher torque of diesel version, it suits the passengers much better when loaded, while the petrol engine is more preferable for people with lower annual mileage.

Another difference between the two models is how their size influences them. The Carens is about 4.54 m long and has a 2,780 mm wheelbase that gives more room for passengers in all three rows. The Triber is less than 4 metres long and uses the removable third seat rows in order to provide it with more flexibility. However, although the packaging makes it easier to drive the Renault in spite of the larger size of the Kia Carens, the latter is more comfortable when fully occupied with passengers, including destination luggage.

The official mileage of the Carens petrol manual is given as 15.70 km/liter whereas the diesel manual achieves this mileage with a figure of 21.30 km/liter making it more efficient as compared to the petrol version on paper. Here, the gap is substantial enough for those who have frequent running to compensate for the expense incurred in acquiring the diesel version of the Carens because of lower operating costs later on.

The Triber petrol manual claims 19.76 km/l, while the AMT is rated at 19.59 km/l. This gives the Triber a clear advantage over the Carens petrol, with a difference of just over 4 km/l between the two manual petrol variants. However, the Carens diesel still posts the strongest official figure overall, despite being a substantially larger and more powerful vehicle.

The data comparing the two vehicles, along with their performance, gives a clear view of the strengths of the Triber and Carens. The Triber, being the more fuel-efficient option wins hands-down when comparing petrol options. On the other hand, the combination of higher torque and better mileage offered by the Carens diesel is commendable compared to its competitor.

Kia Carens vs Renault Triber Real-World Fuel Efficiency

In daily driving, the Kia Carens petrol generally returns around 10–13 km/l in urban conditions and 15–18 km/l on highways, depending on traffic, driving style and passenger load. A combined reference of roughly 12.5 km/l is reasonable for ownership-cost calculations. The diesel performs much better, with around 14–16 km/l in cities and approximately 18–20 km/l on highways. A mixed figure of around 16.5 km/l is therefore a practical estimate for the current manual diesel.

The lightweight nature of the Triber manual brings numerous benefits. According to the owners, the combined mileage is about 17.76 km/l. City mileage is in the area of 13–15 km/l, and highway mileage is approximately 18–19 km/l. Testing of the Triber AMT showed the city mileage of 13.64 km/l and highway mileage of 17.86 km/l, resulting in a combined number of approximately 14.69 km/l. These numbers demonstrate that the Triber is cheaper to run than the Carens petrol; thus, the difference is considerably narrowed when it comes to the Carens diesel.

Also, talking about the tank range, the Triber manual can travel around 710 km on one tank based on its combined mileage, while the Carens diesel can do around 743 km thanks to its much bigger tank of 45 litres. City mileage of the Carens petrol is the worst at close to 563 km, while the Triber AMT stands at about 588 km.
